Shockwave Therapy: What to Expect at Your First Session

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has become one of the most requested treatments at PhysioRevive over the past few years — and for good reason. For stubborn, chronic tendon conditions that haven't responded to other treatments, shockwave therapy offers a highly effective non-surgical option.

What conditions does shockwave therapy treat?

Shockwave therapy is most commonly used for: plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee), calcific tendinitis of the shoulder, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), and greater trochanteric pain syndrome (hip bursitis).

How does it work?

Shockwave therapy delivers high-energy acoustic waves to the affected tissue. These waves stimulate the body's natural healing processes by increasing local blood flow, promoting collagen synthesis, disrupting calcific deposits, and down-regulating pain receptors in the area. For chronic conditions where normal healing has stalled, shockwave essentially "restarts" the healing process.

What does a session feel like?

During treatment, a handheld device is placed against the skin over the target area. You will feel a series of rapid pulse sensations — often described as a tapping or knocking feeling. The treatment can be uncomfortable, particularly over the most tender areas, but most patients tolerate it well. Each session lasts approximately 5–10 minutes.

How many sessions are needed?

Most conditions require 3–5 sessions, spaced one week apart. Evidence suggests the best results are seen 6–12 weeks after completing the course, as the tissue continues to remodel. At PhysioRevive, shockwave therapy is combined with a targeted exercise programme for optimal results.
